When you think about the cheapest places to visit, you probably think of countries in Southeast Asia right away.

Maybe Southeast Asia is a good start, but I wanted to make a list of the cheapest countries to visit that goes beyond the usual places.
I asked people who write about their travels to help me find the most budget-friendly countries to visit. Together, we made a really great list of places from around the world.

I got answers from people who have visited many places all over the world. They talked about different lands, from mountains to beaches, and lots of unique cultures.

There’s still a lot of really cool, cheap places I haven’t seen yet, like people have told me.
Before you decide you can’t travel because it’s too expensive, maybe read this post and think about it again.
Cheapest Countries to Travel in Asia
Thailand

There are still many amazing places I haven’t visited that are affordable, like I’ve heard from others. Before you decide that traveling is too costly, maybe read this and reconsider.
In Thailand, you can travel without spending a lot of money. Even fancy 5-star hotels can cost less than $100.
If you want to spend less money and travel for a longer time, Thailand is one of the most affordable places you can go.
In Bangkok, you can rent a nice hostel room for just $10. If you want to save more, basic hostels are even cheaper.
Some islands have places where you can camp on the beach, which can cost less than staying in a hotel.
On Koh Adang, you can rent a tent with blankets for two people for just 200 baht a day, which is under $3 each person per night. If you bring your own tent, it’s only 30 baht, or about 85 cents.
The only place to stay on the island is at the National Park. They have some small houses for 600 baht, which is about $16.50, or you can camp there.

Traveling to Koh Adang, Thailand, is quite cheap. You can sleep in a tent with a friend for just $3 a night. Renting snorkel gear costs $1. The boat ride from Koh Lipe and back is $5.50. Eating three meals at the island restaurant is $8, and snacks or drinks from 7/11 cost between $5 to $10.
You can enjoy Koh Adang for just $10 a day. There are cool waterfalls to hike to, beaches where you can snorkel, and amazing spots to see the view.

If you want to stay in a really nice place on the island, you can spend less than $30 and enjoy the comfy chalets there.
There aren’t many islands in Thailand where you can find hardly any tourists, so you can almost have the whole beach for just yourself!
Laos

If you want to stay at a nice spot on the island, you can pay less than $30 and relax in cozy cabins. In Thailand, it’s rare to find islands with very few tourists, so you might have the beach almost to yourself!
Laos isn’t a place that lots of people visit in Southeast Asia.
Laos is the only country around here that doesn’t have beaches, so most tourists choose to go to the countries next door instead.
Laos feels real and special because not many tourists go there. It has beautiful scenery, an interesting culture, and the people are really nice.
In the North of Laos, you can walk through thick jungles and meet lots of different people from various groups living there.
In Luang Prabang, the old capital of Laos, you can see old buildings from when the French were there and beautiful Buddhist temples.

Vientiane is a very peaceful city. There, you can see the country’s important national monument.
In the South, you can wander through coffee farms and see perfect waterfalls in the Bolaven Plateau. After that, you can relax on one of the 4000 islands in the Mekong River.
In Laos, we managed to spend just $20 each day for every person.
We spent about $7 each on food, $6 on getting around, and $8 for a room we shared, which means $4 each. The rest of the money was used for other things.
Laos is a very affordable place to visit, especially if you’re traveling with just a little money. It’s great for people who like to explore without spending too much.
Vietnam

Vietnam is a really cool place in Southeast Asia. It’s super pretty and interesting. Plus, everything there is not expensive at all!
In Laos and Vietnam, you can have a great time without spending a lot. You don’t even need to worry about your budget much, as you can live on under $30 a day!

You can easily find nice, private rooms in modern hotels for just $10 a night, even in big cities like Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, and Hanoi.
In some places, you can get a meal for just 50 cents to $2. We even found tasty banh mi sandwiches for only 20 cents!
In Hanoi, you can get a glass of fresh beer for just 10 to 20 cents. Getting around is cheap too, with buses costing about 25 cents, and if you want to travel far, like on a night bus, it might cost up to $15.

In Vietnam, lots of people like to travel on motorbikes. It’s a fun way to get around and can save you even more money.
We were getting by on just $10 a day each since we had our own ride. Gas was really cheap, so we didn’t need to spend money on taxis or buses all the time.
You can get a motorbike in Vietnam for around $250, and when you’re done with it, you can sell it for that amount too.
Some things you can do there cost a lot of money, like taking a cruise in Halong Bay or hiking to see Hang Son Doong, the biggest cave in the world, which costs $3,000!
Vietnam is one of the cheapest places to visit in the whole world, even though some things like fancy trips can be really expensive!
China

Some fun things to do in Vietnam can be pricey, like taking a boat trip around Halong Bay or going on a hike to see the world’s biggest cave, Hang Son Doong, which costs $3,000! Still, Vietnam is one of the cheapest countries to visit, even if some fancy adventures can be super expensive!
I thought China would cost a lot more money than it did, to be honest.
In 2014, we spent a month exploring the country and tried to stick to spending about $30 each day.
We began our journey in Inner Mongolia. After that, we traveled to Datong, Pingyao, and Xi’an. Then we visited Shanghai, Suzhou, and finally spent our last week in Beijing with friends.

We really liked Beijing because there were lots of interesting places to visit, and we always found something fun to do!
In China, you can find lots of places to stay. For a dorm room, it usually costs between $8 and $10, and for a double room, it’s about $20 if you’re not in the big cities.
Noodles or dumplings from a street vendor might only cost $1 or even less. If you want to sit down and eat in a basic restaurant, it could be around $5 to $10.

Night buses and trains were really great for saving money because they were often comfy.
Tickets to get in places can cost a lot, maybe about $15, so watch out!

Malaysia

People don’t often think about going to Peninsula Malaysia when they’re traveling in Southeast Asia for a long time.
Malaysia isn’t as cheap as some other places, but you can still have a good time there without spending more than $30 each day.
Most hostels cost between 20 to 30 RM, which is about $5 to $7. The quality can be different depending on the city, but in popular places, you’ll find something nice and comfortable.
Food in Malaysia is amazing! It’s full of flavors from Chinese, Indian, and Malay cultures. There are so many different dishes, you could try something new every day for weeks.

Street food is really cheap, usually just $1 or $2. If you want to eat at a local restaurant, it’ll cost about $1 to $4. Every city has its own yummy dishes to try.
In Malaysia, you can go from place to place by taking buses, which are not expensive. They travel all over the Peninsula. For instance, taking a bus from Ipoh to Penang takes about 4 hours and costs around $6.
Alcohol is the hardest part when trying to spend less than $30 a day traveling in Malaysia.
In Malaysia, where many are Muslim, drinks like beer and wine cost a lot because the government adds extra money to their prices, especially in bars and restaurants.
In Langkawi, you don’t have to pay extra money for drinks, and in Penang, there’s a place called ‘Cheapest Beer In Penang.’ There, you can buy three cans of Singha for $3 and maybe make some new friends outside the shop.
India

In Malaysia, where lots of people follow the Muslim faith, beer and wine can be quite pricey because the government charges extra money on them, especially in places like bars and restaurants. However, in Langkawi, you don’t have to pay that extra amount for drinks. In Penang, there’s a spot called ‘Cheapest Beer In Penang.’ There, you can buy three cans of Singha for just $3 and maybe even make new friends while hanging out outside the shop.
For young travelers who want to spend less money, India is one of the best places to visit. There’s so much to see and do there without spending a lot.

India is a really big place, so even if you explored it for months, there’d still be so much more to see and do.
Also, you won’t have spent much of your money.
If you want to feel the relaxed, warm atmosphere of India, go down South to Kerala.
You can walk for miles through tea fields, ride a boat on the famous calm waters, and see animals in the big, untouched parks.

You can explore on a budget if you’re a backpacker, spending just 1,000 to 1,500 INR, which is $15 to $22.
You can find rooms for two people in local guesthouses for just 300 INR, which is about $4.
Hostels are a new idea in India, and you can stay in a dorm room there for about 500 INR, which is $7.50.
Typically, the places have really good things like air conditioning, breakfast, and nice hot showers, all included in what you pay.
Traveling in India means you get to try lots of delicious food. It’s one of the best parts because the flavors are so exciting and there are always new dishes to taste.
You usually pay about 100 INR, which is $1.50, for a “veg thali.” It’s an Indian meal that comes with rice, different curry dishes, yogurt, and flatbreads.
Eating in India is fun because the food is tasty and not expensive. You can have lots of yummy things to eat without worrying about spending too much money.
Cambodia

A “veg thali” in India costs about 100 INR, which is like $1.50. It’s a meal with rice, some curries, yogurt, and flatbread. Eating in India is fun because the food is delicious and doesn’t cost a lot. You can enjoy many tasty dishes without spending too much.
Cambodia might be the most affordable place I’ve ever been to.
Siem Reap is a great place to visit because it’s near Angkor Wat, a famous spot. Even though lots of people go there, it’s not expensive.
You can stay in a fancy hotel for just $15 a night, and eat at a nice restaurant for only $10.
Battambang is not as popular, but it’s really affordable for travelers.
While I was there, I spent just $3 for a bed in a room with six beds, and it even had air conditioning.
I spent about $2 for breakfast and $4 for a big meal.

I paid $5 to ride the Bamboo Train, and I waited to find someone to share the ride with me.
The full day tour around the city and nearby villages, seeing some old places, only cost me $15.
If you’re a backpacker, how much money you spend each day can change. It might be between $10 and $30, depending on what you like to do and where you like to stay.
That’s what I call being smart with money!
Taiwan

Exploring Taiwan’s waterfalls can be really exciting. Sometimes, it doesn’t cost much – as low as $10. Other times, it might be around $30. It all depends on what you want to see and where you want to rest. Isn’t it clever to enjoy so much and still save money?
Many people might mix Taiwan up with a famous Southeast Asian country. But really, Taiwan is more like Japan in several ways.

Taiwan has lots and lots of people living there, making it one of the busiest places in the world. But not everyone knows about its tall mountains and green valleys unless they’ve been there to see them.
Traveling in Southeast Asia can be done cheaply, but you can also explore Taiwan’s amazing mountains and green valleys without spending too much. Here are three ways to do it.
You can easily take public transportation from the big cities to visit amazingly green places that are surprisingly close.

Staying in a nice hostel will usually cost about $10 each night, and if you want to stay in a fancier one, it will be around $15-20 a night.

In the Philippines, you can have a special treat. We found a beautiful little house by the beach on Siquijor Island, and it cost us less than $30!

Imagine getting around easily, munching on tasty snacks from street stalls, and finding cozy places to sleep for just $7 a night. Doesn’t that sound fun?
Think about all of that, and also a place where the people are so happy to meet you that you don’t have to spend money at all.
Traveling in Pakistan is like a dream because you can do it for less than $15 each day.
It’s a special country where you’ll find the nicest people you’ll ever meet on your travels.

In Pakistan, you might find someone who is super excited to be your friend and show you around, even paying for things. But remember, it’s important to be polite and not expect it every time.
Pakistan isn’t just a place where things don’t cost much. It’s a country that has something fun for everyone to enjoy.
If you want to camp by the really tall mountains, explore old Mughal buildings without a crowd, or enjoy tasty spicy food for less than $3 a day, Pakistan is a great place to visit.
Armenia

Pakistan isn’t just a country where everything is cheap. It’s a place full of exciting adventures for everyone. Whether you’re camping near towering mountains, wandering through ancient Mughal palaces without the crowds, or relishing delicious spicy meals for under $3 a day, Pakistan is a fantastic destination.
2023 Update: While traveling to Armenia in general is safe, there are occasional violent flare-ups in the contested region of Artsakh/Nagorno Karabakh due to the Armenia-Azerbaijan border crisis. Avoid this region and the rest of Armenia is safe.

Armenia might not be a favorite right away for travelers, but I absolutely loved it the moment I saw it.
Maybe it’s because I like different and unusual places, or maybe I’m drawn to places that have sad stories from the past.
Even though I didn’t stay in Armenia for long, I still loved it a lot.
Armenia is different from its nearby countries because it has its own special culture and history.

Armenia has its own letters to write with and its own way of speaking. The people there have a unique background and their own special traditions.
Sometimes it seems like part of Asia and other times it feels really European. This lovely mix of East and West is clear in this interesting country.
Traveling there doesn’t cost much, and it’s quite safe. Plus, you can get there easily from most places in Europe.
You can expect to pay about $15 for a night in a hotel or hostel.
A meal at a simple diner is about $5. You can ride a little bus in the city for under $1, and a fun day tour costs about $15.
Oman

You might spend around $15 to stay in a hotel or hostel for a night. Getting a meal at a basic restaurant will cost about $5. You can hop on a city bus for less than $1, and joining a fun day tour is about $15.
Oman has so much amazing nature! You can see beautiful places all around. There are mountains, deserts, and beaches that look so cool. It feels like a big, awesome adventure!
In the morning, you could be on a beach, watching turtles lay their eggs. By the time the sun comes up, you might be in a desert with camels all around you.
People in Oman are really friendly. If you make friends with someone there, they might invite you over, give you tasty food, and treat you super nicely.
Some people think visiting Oman costs a lot, and with fancy places to stay and tours, it can be. But there are ways to visit without spending too much money.
You can camp almost anywhere in Oman, like in the desert, on a beach, or up in the mountains. Just bring a tent and sleeping bag, and you can sleep under the stars without spending any money.
Most places to see in Oman are free. You can visit clear blue water wadis, amazing beaches, walk in the desert, or look at beautiful mosques. For now, you don’t have to pay to enjoy these things.

The most you’ll spend money on is a car. A regular car costs about $25 a day, while a fancy one for rough roads is around $60.
If you’re going way into the desert or want to drive over bumpy places, you’ll need a special car with 4-wheel drive. But if you’re just going to drive around and not go too wild, a regular car will be just fine.
So, gather some friends to share the expenses. You can buy cheap food at the supermarket or have meals at a cafe that don’t cost much.
You can explore Oman for less than $30 a day, and believe me, it will be a journey like you’ve never experienced before!
Bangladesh

Bangladesh isn’t the place everyone thinks of first. People say it’s risky. They say it’s not safe for women, don’t they?
I traveled around Bangladesh for a whole month with my backpack. I met other women doing the same thing, and if you want to spend little money, it’s the perfect place to go!
Bangladesh might not have a lot of money, but the people there are really kind and always ready to help. Their kindness never runs out.
Bangladesh is a great place to visit for many reasons. The most famous ones are that it has the biggest mangrove forest on Earth and the longest beach too. Isn’t that cool?
There’s also a bright pink palace there, which is pretty exciting!

Bangladesh has some really tasty food that I think is the best I’ve ever tried.
The curries in Bangladesh are really delicious and come in many different flavors. You can try them for just $1 at a local restaurant.
The tea in Bangladesh is something special. For just a few cents, you can enjoy a sweet and milky chai that’s amazing. Be careful, though—it might become your favorite!

Russia

2023 Update: Due to the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, travel to Russia is not recommended, as it has a level 4 Do Not Travel advisory from the US State Department and several other foreign agencies. I am leaving this in the post in hopes of better days for Ukrainians and Russians alike, when citizens are safe and tourism can return to both their countries.
Once you have your visa, which is the most expensive part, everything else in Russia is quite cheap. You can travel, eat, and see cool places without spending much money.
I’ve only visited Moscow and St. Petersburg, and I think the other areas must be even less expensive.
You can stay in a dorm room for as little as $5, and it’s nice enough. People in Russia are friendly, and you can also find places to stay for free with Couchsurfing.
The Moscow metro is like a big museum with its pretty stations, and it only costs 50 cents to ride for however long you want.
You can go on free walking tours in both cities. They help you figure out where things are and let you see important places.
We really enjoyed visiting the Space Museum in Moscow. After that, we explored the nearby parks, which have lots of cool statues and buildings to look at.
In Russia, the food can be different, and even though the country is really big, the servings you get might be a little small.
We followed some smart travel tips like eating away from busy places, looking at prices before sitting down, and asking local people where to eat. By doing this, we found good meals for about $3-5 each.
Russia’s big cities are really pretty and cool, and you can have fun there without spending more than $30 a day.
Myanmar (Burma)

2023 Update: Due to the ongoing Myanmar civil war, I do not recommend traveling here at this time. Out of hope for the future, I’m keeping this on the list for better times.
Myanmar is mostly cheap to visit like other places in Southeast Asia, but it costs a little bit more each day as it catches up with nearby countries.
It’s only a little more money, like $5 to $10 extra each day. It depends on if you share a room and what fun things you decide to do.
Visiting Myanmar usually costs about $35 a day, but you can spend less if you’re careful. That money covers your meals, drinks, and a place to sleep. The only other thing you might pay for is a bus ride, which costs between $10 and $15.
Sometimes, your travel style can change the cost. I ended up sharing rooms with other solo female travelers I met while on buses or with some other small groups.
If you’re traveling alone, you’ll probably spend most of your money on somewhere to sleep. A single room might cost about $25 each night, but sometimes you can find a dorm for $10.
Sometimes, choosing to eat at small food stalls or local places instead of big restaurants can save money. There aren’t many parties or bars to go to at night, so you spend less on drinks, too.
Many of the best things to see and do in Myanmar don’t cost much or are free. It’s one of the cheapest places to travel in the whole world.
One of my favorite things to do without spending much money is to ride the Yangon circle line train. It’s a train that goes through the countryside, and for just $1, you get to enjoy a few hours of beautiful views.

Most Affordable Destinations to Visit in the Americas
Mexico

One of the best things that don’t cost a lot is riding on the Yangon circle line train. It takes you through the countryside, and you can see lovely views for just $1. Another fun ride is the train from Hsipaw to Pyin Oo Lwin. It goes over a very tall bridge called the Goteik Viaduct, and you can take this amazing trip for only $3.
Mexico is a great place to visit without spending much money! It has everything you can think of: big mountains, amazing waterfalls, sunny beaches, exciting waves for surfing, beautiful spots for diving, and vast deserts.
If you’ve never seen a cenote, you should definitely check one out.
Even in the fancy places where tourists go, you can still find street food that’s really cheap and hostels to stay in that don’t cost much.
If you want to save money, it’s easy. If you want to try something fancy, that’s simple too!
Most street food stands only ask for about $2 USD for a good meal.
In restaurants, food and drinks cost between $7 and $20. You can get a beer at the Oxxo store for about $1, and sometimes they offer lime to go with your Corona!
A drink at the bar costs around $5.
You can stay at nice hostels for around $10 a night if you’re backpacking. If you want something fancier, it might cost you $20 to $30.
You have a few choices to get around. You can ride in shared taxis, called taxi collectivos, which are cheap (like $4 USD from Playa del Carmen to Tulum for a 2-hour trip). Or, you can take buses.
If you know how to speak Spanish, you can take the local buses. They’re really cheap, like just $15 for a long trip from Mexico City to San Cristóbal de las Casas, which takes 12 hours.
You can also hop on a tourist bus to visit a lot of the popular places. It costs about $40 for the same trip as before.
When you stay in one place for a long time, it’s easier to save money because moving around can cost a bit. On the island, I only spent about $10 each day.
You can enjoy both going places and seeing sights for just $30 a day if you keep track of your spending.
Nicaragua

Backpacking in Nicaragua is super fun! You get to explore different places and see lots of cool things.
The great thing is that traveling in Nicaragua is really affordable. It won’t use up all your money because it’s one of the cheapest places to visit in the Americas.
When you do it the right way, you can have fun on a budget. You can spend around $25-30 each day and still have plenty of activities to enjoy.
In Nicaragua, you can do exciting things like slide down a volcano or ride a motorbike on the island of Ometepe.
On the Corn Islands, you can dive underwater to see pretty fish. In San Juan del Sur, you can dance and party all night. At Maderas Beach, you can surf on big waves and have lots of fun.
No matter what you like, I’m sure you’ll find something fun to do there.

Guatemala

Living in Guatemala is like being in a playground for explorers. You can have a cozy place to sleep, eat yummy meals twice, ride local buses, sip on drinks, and even have some money left over, all for just $20 a day. It’s a dream spot for people who love adventure with their backpacks!

Before I went to Chile, lots of travelers told me it would cost more than other places in Latin America.
So, I decided to plan for spending a bit more money while I was visiting Chile for a month.
When I got to Chile, I was surprised because things didn’t cost as much as people had told me.

The bus ride from San Pedro de Atacama to La Serena lasted around 15 hours and cost $22 USD.
In Chile, you can travel for $30 USD, but on Easter Island, that won’t be enough unless you camp, because food is pricey there.
On the mainland, if you want to try exciting things like jumping from planes, riding rafts, or hiking up volcanoes, you’ll need more than $30 USD a day.
You can save money by walking on the different trails by yourself and looking at the beautiful views.
Bolivia

If you want to do fun things like skydiving, rafting, or climbing volcanoes, it’ll cost more than $30 a day. But you can save money by exploring the trails on your own and enjoying the pretty scenery.
Of all the countries I’ve visited in South America, Bolivia is one of the least expensive for traveling and getting good value for your money.
When you hear the word “cheap,” you might think it means something isn’t very good or is made poorly.
You won’t believe it, but in Bolivia, staying in cozy hotels and hostels can cost less than $10 a night for a private room.

Ethiopia has lots of different things to see and do. There are interesting places, tasty foods, and cool animals for everyone to enjoy.
Gondar, one of my favorite cities in Ethiopia, is up north close to the Simien Mountains.
People often call Gondar the Camelot of Africa because it used to be where the emperor lived, with big castles and a royal area. To go inside and see these amazing places, it costs 100 birr, which is about $4.50.
Ethiopia is one of the more affordable places to visit in Africa.
In Ethiopia, traveling doesn’t cost much. You can stay in a simple hotel with two stars for about $10 a night for two people.
The food in Ethiopia doesn’t cost a lot. In the morning, you can get real Ethiopian Coffee for 9 Birr, which is like 40 cents. Then, you can have a breakfast smoothie with mango, avocado, and a little lime for 10 Birr, or 50 cents.

We really like South Africa. It’s definitely one of our top three favorite places because it always amazes us, no matter how often we go.
There’s a lot to do here because it’s such an interesting place. You can see wild animals on a safari, taste different wines, or even go skiing when it’s winter!
You can try so many cool and exciting things, like swimming in a cage with sharks, jumping from the sky, or swinging over a canyon.
You can see the third largest canyon in the world, and it’s amazing to look at!
Also, because of how money exchanges work, visiting South Africa remains really affordable for people coming from other countries!
You can rent a car for less than $20 a day, and that even covers insurance. Plus, you can stay at a camp in Kruger Park for about $10 a day.
You can buy food from nearby shops and have a BBQ right there, which saves a lot of money, and enjoy the nice views all around.
If you don’t want to rent a car, you can take buses or trains in places like Johannesburg and Cape Town. It’s not expensive and really easy to use.
In South Africa, you can make your money go far, and as long as you’re smart about things, it’s no more dangerous than many cities in America!

Estonia

You can easily use buses and trains in Johannesburg and Cape Town if you don’t want to drive. They’re cheap and simple to hop on. In South Africa, money can last you a long time, and as long as you’re careful, it’s not any more dangerous than some American cities.
Estonia is the best place to visit for a good deal, according to Lonely Planet in 2016. I was really surprised by how great everything was there.
Estonia is a place I love because it has beautiful nature, cool buildings, friendly people, and it’s really easy to stay connected with everyone.
In Estonia, you can use Wi-Fi almost everywhere. It’s free in lots of places, like on buses and even in the streets.
Hostels in Estonia usually cost between 9 to 13 euros, with most people paying around 10 euros, even when lots of people are visiting.
I spent about 10 euros each day on food. Breakfast cost me 1 to 2 euros, lunch was 4 to 5 euros, and I had a cooked dinner for 3 euros.
In canteen places like LIDO, you can get a two-course lunch for about 4 euros.
You can find good lunch deals for 4 to 6 euros. If you’re outside Tallinn, it costs even less.
In supermarkets, you can find ready-made meals that cost even less if you want to save more money.
In Tallinn, you can get a card to ride buses and trams for 1, 3, or 5 days. If you buy the 5-day card, it costs about 6€, which is about 1.20€ each day.
In Parnu, Tartu, Viljandi, and other little towns, you can walk to everything because it’s all nearby.
Seeing cool places can cost you nothing or up to 5€ to get in, with some special spots costing more. If you’re a student, you can pay less for both visiting places and riding buses and trams.

You should definitely visit the Riga Central Market. But if you have somewhere to stay, you can buy groceries for the week for just $30.
Attractions cost between $5 and $10, but the best one is the free walking tour, which doesn’t cost anything (but it’s nice to give a tip!).
Riga might not have as many activities as some big European cities, but remember, the Old Town is just a tiny part, less than 1% of the whole city!

North Macedonia

North Macedonia is one of the cheapest places we’ve ever visited.
By European standards, the Balkans are generally affordable, yet North Macedonia stands out as especially inexpensive.

In Skopje and near Lake Ohrid, you can stay in a hostel with other people for just $8 to $14. If you want your own room and bathroom, some hotels let you stay for $20 a night.
You can make your money last with food! Eating in North Macedonia doesn’t cost much. Simple meals are cheap, so you can enjoy local dishes without spending a lot.
In North Macedonia, you can have a meal with a drink for about $4. If you’re eating with a friend, you can both enjoy three courses for under $15.

Sarajevo, the main city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, really amazed me!
I didn’t know whether the city would be cheap or pricey because I hadn’t checked ahead of time. Wow, was I surprised!
A simple hostel in Sarajevo costs between 9 and 15 euros for a night. It depends on where it is and how nice it is.
The hostel I stayed in cost 10 euros each night, which was a good deal. Plus, it was a nice place!
Food doesn’t cost much either. You can get a cevapi and a beer for just 5 euros—what a bargain! Other fun things, like seeing the bobsled site and tunnels, will cost around 15 euros if you go on a private tour.
If you’re not into tours, you can hike to the bobsled track in an hour or two, and it’s free. Going into the tunnels only costs a few euros.
Sarajevo is great for having fun at night too. You can try local drinks, and they only cost about one euro each!
All the travelers I’ve met couldn’t believe how far their money went in Bosnia. It’s really surprising!
Albania

I visited Albania for about 10 days this summer and was amazed at how wonderful the country is.
The people I met were really nice, and every place I visited was so beautiful!
Albania is a place where you can find pretty lakes, big mountains, and clean beaches. They have everything you might want to see!
It’s important to rent a car when you’re in Albania so you can explore it yourself.
If you visit when it’s not too busy, renting a car doesn’t cost much money.
I really liked all of Albania, but if you’re going there, you should definitely see Sarande and the Albanian Riviera.

It’s important to know that it’s not a good time to travel to Ukraine right now because of a war. Back in 2018, it was a fun place to visit, but it’s not safe to go there at the moment.
Right now, because of what’s happening with politics and money problems, Ukraine is likely the least expensive place to visit in Europe, maybe even the whole world.
The money in Ukraine, called hryvnia, is now worth much less than it was in 2013, like three times less! When I visited last, I felt a bit sad because everything was so cheap, and it didn’t seem fair to pay so little.
You could stay in a cozy room in Lviv’s oldest hotel with a big breakfast for just $20 a night! And in the heart of Kiev, a roomy apartment for four people was only $30 a night!
Eating out doesn’t cost a lot. You can have a good meal for just $5, even at fancy places it’s still cheaper than anywhere else.
Western Ukrainian cities are great for visiting cafes. You can go from one cafe to another all day and only spend around $10!
Traveling is also very cheap. You can take an overnight train from Kiev to Odessa for just $5, and even in the cheapest seats, you still get a bed with clean sheets!
Ukraine is a safe place to visit if you stay away from the East, near Donetsk. Right now is a great time to go explore!
Portugal

Traveling isn’t expensive at all. You can catch a night train from Kiev to Odessa for only $5. Even in the cheapest seats, you’ll have a bed with nice, clean sheets! Ukraine is quite safe to visit, as long as you steer clear of the areas in the East, near Donetsk. Now is an excellent time to explore!
Portugal is a really popular place to visit right now.
Portugal may be small, but it has been around for almost 900 years. It has a lot of interesting things, like fun culture, many beaches, and really yummy food.
And what’s more, it’s one of the best places in Europe for travelers who want to save money.
Lisbon, Porto, and the South coast are the places everyone likes to visit.
If you want to see other cool places, there’s Évora, Coimbra, Aveiro, Guimarães, Braga, and even the islands of Madeira and the Açores.
And there are even more places to see!

In August, you should visit Prizren when lots of people come for DokuFest. It’s a big festival that makes the city really exciting.
If you don’t have much money to spend, you’ll quickly learn that in Kosovo, you can live on less than $25 a day.
Eating at a restaurant will cost you about $3 to $5, and staying in a hostel dormitory for a night is around $10 to $12.
If you’re traveling with someone, sharing a room with two beds will cost about the same as if you were by yourself.
Public transportation is really affordable here compared to other places in Europe. For example, going from Pristina to Prizren only costs about $5.
Greece

If you’re on a trip with a friend, staying in a room with two beds isn’t more expensive than staying alone. Also, buses and trains are super cheap here compared to other parts of Europe. Like, if you want to go from Pristina to Prizren, it’s only about five bucks.
Greece is a favorite place for people who want to travel without spending a lot of money.
Athens, the capital, is a great city to visit when not many people are around, especially between November and March.
Almost no tourists are around, so everything costs less money.
There are lots of cool old places to see in Athens that can keep you busy for many days.
You should definitely check out the Acropolis. There’s a special ticket that costs 30 EUR, or about $31.40, and it lets you visit six historical places.
Reserve your hotel room early, and you’ll spend around 20 EUR, or about $21, each night for a double room. This will be in a hotel near the center of Athens, close to Plaka and the Acropolis.
If you don’t mind sharing a room, you can find beds for about 8 EUR.
The least expensive food you can get is a gyro. It’s yummy meat grilled on a stick and put into a pita bread with some vegetables. It costs around 2 EUR. If you want a coffee, the price begins at 1.5 EUR.
You could ask people for advice on where to eat. It’s sometimes best to pick tavernas without English menus.
Serbia

Belgrade, even though it’s one of the most modern cities around, is super cheap to visit.
I stayed at the cool Sun Hostel, which was close to the city center. I got myself a private room there for just $18 a night, even when lots of people were visiting.
Food costs very little, with “Serbian fast food” meals priced between $1-3. You can enjoy yummy treats like pljeskavica, which is a kind of burger from the Balkans.
I treated myself to a special sushi dinner because I was really missing Asian food. I got two tasty, fresh rolls and a beer for just $11. It was exciting!
Taking a bus in the city costs just 50 cents each time you ride. If you want to travel to another city by bus, it usually costs between $10 and $15.
